Most of us have probably experienced a family road trip where the space is so cramped you can feel the breath of the person next to you. For the modern family, a minivan with plenty of room and seating is ideal for long trips or errands around town. In a recent Motor Trend article, the 2011 Toyota Sienna and the 2011 Honda Odyssey were tested by real families.

The tested Sienna was the upper-middle-class XLE, replete with the premium package including rear-seat entertainment, navigation, park assist,  and Bluetooth, among other features. As with any family vehicle, the most important aspect is accessibility of seating. The Sienna’s middle row allowed ample room for an eight passenger and the center section can easily be removed and stowed with the side panel in the left rear cargo area.

With so many family-style vehicles to choose from these days, including the newer SUVs and Crossovers, the minivan might be easily overlooked. But the design, room and versatility of a minivan still can’t be beat. Edmunds Inside Line has just released the results of their 2011 minivan comparison, and the Toyota Sienna came out on top.

The team at Inside Line scored the vehicles with their usual comparison standards with just a few modifications. For one, the performance and instrumental testing results weighed in at just ten percent, while key feature content was weighted just as much as the as-tested price. Other criteria includes a 29-point evaluation by Inside Line editors, fuel consumption and gut feeling.

The Sienna boasts a v6 engine and was the quickest van in the test with a 0-60-mph time of 8.1 seconds. According to the drivers, the engine feels powerful and smooth and it was the best true automatic in the group. The overall comment about the Toyota Sienna was that it offers the best all-around package of comfort, performance and value in a minivan under $40,000.

We love the honesty of minivans. While crossovers sucker you into believing that you can reclaim your old, cool, coffeehouse life behind their fashionably hinged doors, you know exactly what you’ll find when you tug a minivan’s sliding door.
