During the last 12 months, Toyota has turned heads with tremendous value-driven vehicles.

However, Toyota drew attention for a different kind of vehicle at last month’s New York Auto Show: the Scion FR-S Sports Coupe concept. This concept was introduced to increase enthusiast passion for the brand, and has sparked a new kind of excitement for the future of Scion.

FR-S stands for Front engine, Rear wheel drive, and Sport. In terms of exterior design, the FR-S presents like a sports car with its long hood, short overhangs, and low stance. The concept model also came equipped with gorgeous 20″ rims and a sparkling red paint job, rounding out a look that is nothing short of spectacular. Under the hood lies a 2.0-liter boxer engine, which was co-developed by Subaru and has been updated with both port and direct fuel injection. It will be offered in a six-speed manual or conventional automatic transmission.

The FR-S will be the inspiration for a new production Scion coming next year, and we can’t wait to hear the details. Watch this video from Motor Trend and stay tuned for more news!

Toyota has finally produced a Scion that is certain to be embraced by sport compact enthusiasts. As Motor Trend reports, the Scion FR-S, which is being showcased at the New York Auto Show, is poised to re-ignite enthusiasts’ passion for the brand.

The FR-S was modeled in part after the popular AE86 Toyota Corolla. As a continuation of the Toyota Subaru collaborations, the FR-S sports a Subaru-sourced 2.0-liter boxer engine – the underpinnings of which were co-developed with the company. The engine has been updated with port and direct fuel injection, which Toyota is calling DS-4.  Although official power figures have not been released, the engine could produce as much as 200 horsepower.

The concept features an aggressive body kit, 20-inch wheels (8.5 inches wide in the front and a massive 10.5 inches wide in the rear), and motorcycle-style 18-inch annular carbon ceramic Matrix rotors. With its hot new design and promising performance components, we hope the Scion FR-S is just the first in a string of very intriguing products.

This interesting New York Times article describes Scion cars as blending “performance, price and aesthetics in optimal measure.” The Scion arm of Toyota’s brand has been pursuing these youth-positive goals since 2003.

Scion’s value conscious fans will cheer the low price-point and the robust standard features like 18-inch wheels, a 300-watt, 8-speaker Pioneer sound system, the gorgeous moonroof, 4-wheel disc brakes, traction control and, crucially, 180 horsepower.

Drivers will enjoy the thick purposeful steering wheel which tilts and telescopes for comfort.  The exterior offers clean lines and design features reminiscent of a drag racer.  This open canvas should appeal to the thriving Scion aftermarket fans, who will surely equip the new tC with personalized distinctiveness.

The 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine thrives in the lower spectrum with feather light steering, and accelerates through road turns with a firmly planted chassis.  Well designed rear sight lines provide wide visibility, even with two passengers in the rear seats. With an 8.2, 0-60 acceleration rate and great fuel-economy the 2011 tC speeds you to a weekend drive to the Willamette vineyards as well as zippy daily commutes.
