Perhaps the greatest challenge in creating fuel-efficient vehicles is achieving a large enough size to fit the whole family without sacrificing big bucks at the pump.

Enter the 2012 Prius V.

As Motor Trend reports, the second in the “family” of 2012 Prii presents a more fuel-efficient option to the consumer who enjoys the space of vehicles in the crossover and SUV categories. Toyota noted that Americans often seek increased comfort and more cargo space in mid-sized vehicles rather than cramming more passengers into a third row seat, so the 58% extra space is utilized for extra passenger comfort and cargo space.

The “V” in this Prius stands for versatility, and it delivers exactly that. Despite being 238 pounds heavier than the standard Prius, it still delivers an impressive 44 city MPG. Also reported was a “level of driving elegance that’s simply absent from the normal car”. They were especially impressed at how such a large hybrid could handle so smoothly around the California curves. Rather than targeting existing Prius owners who need more room, Toyota is launching the Prius V to provide a better option to Crossover and SUV owners who aren’t excited about $4.00/gallon fuel prices. The company predicts this model to account for 15-20% of 2012 Prius sales.

Spring is one of the prime times for auto maintenance. That first wash-n-wax on a warm Saturday afternoon is liberating. Winter’s gloom is literally washed away. Take out the snow shovel, the gloves and heavy boots and store them until next season. Surely summer can’t be far away.

Some preparation now will help ensure that your summer driving plans go as smoothly as you envision. Here are some tips on getting your vehicle ready for summer.

• Read the owner’s manual and follow the recommended service schedules.
• Have hard starts, rough idling, stalling, etc., corrected before hot weather sets in.
• Flush and refill the cooling system (radiator) according to the service manual’s recommendations. The level, condition and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically.
• If you are not a do-it-yourselfer, look for repair facilities that employ Certified automotive technicians.
• The tightness and condition of belts, clamps and hoses should be checked by a qualified auto technician.
• Have a marginally operating air conditioner system serviced by a qualified technician to reduce the likelihood of more costly repairs.
• Change the oil and oil filter as specified in owner’s manual (and properly dispose of used oil).
• Replace other filters (air, fuel, PCV, etc.) as recommended.
• Check the condition of tires, including the spare. Always check tire pressure when the tires are cold.
• Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned out bulbs.
• Replace worn wiper blades and keep plenty of washer solvent on hand to combat summer’s dust and insects.

During the last 12 months, Toyota has turned heads with tremendous value-driven vehicles.

However, Toyota drew attention for a different kind of vehicle at last month’s New York Auto Show: the Scion FR-S Sports Coupe concept. This concept was introduced to increase enthusiast passion for the brand, and has sparked a new kind of excitement for the future of Scion.

FR-S stands for Front engine, Rear wheel drive, and Sport. In terms of exterior design, the FR-S presents like a sports car with its long hood, short overhangs, and low stance. The concept model also came equipped with gorgeous 20″ rims and a sparkling red paint job, rounding out a look that is nothing short of spectacular. Under the hood lies a 2.0-liter boxer engine, which was co-developed by Subaru and has been updated with both port and direct fuel injection. It will be offered in a six-speed manual or conventional automatic transmission.
